Horse Rug Sizes and Fitting Guidelines
Rug Fitting
All of the sizes quoted on horserugheaven.co.uk are in feet and inches. You will need to measure your horse accurately as we cannot accept our products back for an exchange if they have been tried on.
Please DO measure your horse rather than just going by previous purchases with other companies.
Rugs are usually sized in three-inch increments. The most acurate way of measuring your horse or pony is to measure from the centre of the chest along the body to the rear of the quarters where you would expect the rug to finish.
As horses vary so much in girth and build it is essential to take these measurements before purchasing your rug. If a rug does not fit properly it will not stay in place and can slip and rub your horse.
Fitting tips
Once you have received your new horse rug you may need some tips on fitting and sizing. At horse rug heaven we are always on hand to help and please feel free to email info@horserugheaven.co.uk at any time for advice, we will always do out best to help. When placing your rug onto your horse you should always ensure that the coat lies flat, the best way to do this is to place the rug over the withers and then pull it back into place.
Rugs with leg straps
With rugs using leg straps take the left leg strap, pass it between the hind legs and fasten it to the left hand side. Then take the right strap and pass it through the hind legs and through the loop made by the left strap then fasten to the right hand side. Adjust the leg straps equally so that there is room to place the width of your hand between the straps and the inner thigh. This allows freedom of movement and ensures that the rug stays in place.
Rugs with cross-over surcingles
When fitting a rug with cross surcingles care should be taken to ensure that the straps of the cross surcingle cross in the centre of the horses belly well forward of the horses stifle. If you make sure the straps are on the roundest part of the body you cant go far wrong. As with the leg straps you should ensure that there is a hands width between the straps and the horse.
